I’m honestly surprised it took this long to try to do a full orbital launch. Feels like they’ve been able to for years, and yet never took on a payload someone was willing to risk. Very different from the Falcon 9 days.
Maybe they really wanted to combine the first orbital flight with a chopstick landing (attempt), which they’re still not quite ready for.
